Teddy Roosevelt and the River of Doubt

What happened:
In December 1913, Theodore Roosevelt his son, and several other men went on an expedition to map the River of doubt. Shortly into the expedition something went afoul and the group ended up wandering around in the middle of the Amazon looking for a way back to civilization. While they wondered they were stalked for a brief period by the Cinta Larga, a tribe of cannibals. Colonel Ranon was attacked by them at one point and had his dog killed. Ranon responded by giving them gifts as a sign of friendship and respect, and told his men ‘Die if you must, but never kill.’
Many of the expedition members got very ill, including Roosevelt himself, who’s condition got to the point he considered taking a lethal dose of morphine. They also became desperate and stole food from each other, one man being murdered for food. By the time they reached civilization all but three of the men survived.
Notes:

  • Got stalked my the Cinta Larga, cannibal tribes people

  • Three men died, but everyone else made it out alive.
  • Kermit was newly engaged when the expedition started.
  • If Kermit hadn’t been there Teddy would have died
  • Teddy had recently lost the election
  • Roosevelt almost died
